Please Bear With Me

S5E12 - BBQ and Blake Blackmar

Former Baylor offensive lineman and BBQ aficionado Blake Blackmar joins Please Bear with Me to discuss his tailgate scene and the unprecedented rise of the Baylor OL.

The Baylor Bears moved up to #14 in the nation after a 31-24 victory over long-time rival Texas in what could have been the Longhorns last visit to Waco for some time. McLane was rocking for this one as fans chanted a sarcastic "SEC-SEC-SEC" as Texas left the field. What an amazing moment.

Travis opens this episode with the news of TCU Head Coach Gary Patterson being let go after a 20 year ride with the Horned Frogs. It's not every day you see a University get rid of a coach with a statue in front of the stadium. Gary was asked to coach through the end of the season, but he decided to step down immediately. What does this mean for some of the Baylor assistants? Travis discusses.

We follow this up with a recap of the win over Texas, and how after a rocky 1st half offensive performance the Bears were able to turn it around. Gary Bohanon threw 2 INT's, but the defense came through big with 2 crucial turnovers themselves. Many thought Texas would at least have the advantage in special teams, but the Bears shut that down as well. RJ Sneed had a tipped punt and Baylor stopped a horrendous 4th and 11 fake punt call by Steve Sarkisian.

Then former Baylor offensive lineman and BBQ aficionado Blake Blackmar joins the pod to break down good BBQ and this unprecedented turnaround of the Baylor offensive line. After finishing last in the Big 12 in rushing offense last year the Bears are now sitting atop the league. Blake discusses the main reasons behind the transformation and how this may be one of the best Baylor offensive lines in quite some time. Blake can't help but wish he could get out there with the guys. Hopefully the OU game in a couple of weeks isn't another 11am kickoff because Blake has something special planned for next Saturday.

Travis ends the pod with a short overview of TCU and this week's "Bear Necessities" which look pretty similar to what he wanted to see against Texas. Zach Evans is a dynamic RB and can definitely beat us, but Baylor's rush defense has come on strong the last 3 games and he believes them to be up to the task.

Very interested to see the Baylor turnout in Fort Worth against a struggling TCU team. Is it possible that Bears fans could outnumber the horned frogs? We'll find out on Saturday. Travel safe, be loud, and be proud!

S5E13 - Just Ready for OU and Bobby Evans

Travis recaps the TCU loss QUICKLY! Then we are joined by current LA Rams and former Oklahoma Football OL Bobby Evans to give us a look inside his time at OU amongst other things.

The Bears were handed a tough loss to rival TCU last saturday, but in true Bryce Petty fashion we are now "just ready for OU". Who, like Texas, could be visiting Waco for the last time as a Big 12 opponent.

Travis begins this episode discussing the most recent news revolving around the Baylor Football program as Assistant Head Coach Joey McGuire has accepted a position to become the new Texas Tech Head Coach. Travis is impressed with the humility shown by McGuire to stay around the program after Aranda was awarded the Head Coaching position a few years back. Baylor surely wouldn't be the same without Coach McGuire.

We then dive into the TCU loss and what went wrong. Travis felt confident leading into the game especially after hearing both Max Duggan and Zach Evans would not be available for the Horned Frogs. But Freshman QB Chandler Morris came out with nothing to lose, and Travis gives him credit for one heck of a game against the stout Baylor defense.

Scotty Swingler is then joined by current LA Rams and former Oklahoma Sooner OL Bobby Evans. Bobby discusses his football life and the time he spent playing for Oklahoma. You don't want to miss this one!

Travis puts the finishing touches on this episode discussing Baylor's chances this weekend and why he thinks this will come down to mainly the QB play for both sides.

An exciting weekend looms as Fox Big Noon Kickoff makes its way to Waco Texas for the first time. We all remember what happened last time the Sooners visited Waco for a nationally televised game. Let's hope the outcome is a little different this weekend.

S5E14 - A Rushing Record in Danger! with Terrance Ganaway

Travis Corley is taking a week off, so Scotty Swingler steps back into his former role as host for this week's episode! Scotty kicks off the episode by discussing Baylor's historic win over Oklahoma and what it means as we evaluate Gerry Bohanon, Abram Smith, and Dave Aranda. He also discusses his recently published "All-Time Baylor Football Team."

Former Baylor RB and longtime friend of the show Terrance Ganaway stops by to talk all things Baylor football. Of particular interest: Ganaway's single-season rushing record at Baylor is in jeopardy considering Smith's current yards-per-game pace. How does he feel about Baylor's history of running backs, Smith's big season, and the potential of his record being broken? Find out in this conversation.

Scotty closes the episode by previewing how Baylor matches up against Kansas State for this Saturday's showdown in Manhattan. The Bears have a legitimate chance to end up in the Big 12 title game if they can win out and if Oklahoma State emerges victorious at Bedlam!

S5E15 - A BUTT Bowl for 10 Wins!

Travis talks Gerry Bohanon injury and what he likes about Freshman QB Blake Shapen. Then we preview the BUTT bowl for an opportunity at a 10 win season.

The Baylor Bears are 1 win away from a 10 win season after dominating the Kansas State Wildcats. The final score of 20-10 does not tell the full story of this one. Aside from one 65 yard run the Bears didn't give the Wildcats any room to breathe.

Travis opens this episode talking about the potential of Baylor making a 2nd Big 12 Championship appearance in 3 years. There were several different scenarios that could have landed the Bears in the Conference Championship, but now we have a clear cut answer. Beat Tech and hope the Pokes pull it out against the Sooners.

Gerry Bohanon went down with a hamstring injury in the closing minutes of the 1st half, but redshirt Freshman QB Blake Shapen stepped in beautifully leading the Bears to a FG before half and crushing the Wildcat's momentum. Travis updates us on Bohanon's injury and compares and contrasts the strengths and weaknesses between the two QB's. Travis believes Shapen can lead us to a Big 12 Championship if given the chance.

We then break down what made the win over a very good Kansas State so dominant. They've flown under the radar this year, but had they won they would have had the same record as the Bears. As we know now, that didn't happen, and the advanced statistics tell a different story than the final score.

Next we'll preview the BUTT bowl as the Bears have an excellent opportunity to reach 10 wins on the season on Senior day in Waco. We could see a few QB's play for Tech, but Travis believes the defensive game plan should stay fairly similar regardless of who is under center for the Red Raiders.

Finally Travis wraps up this episode with what Jalen Pitre, "The One Who Stayed", has meant to Baylor University. Also his thoughts on this special group of Seniors who decided to stick around when Aranda came to town, and we can't thank them enough.

S5E16 - Big 12 Championship Preview and Travis Roeder

Please Bear with Me welcomes Travis Roeder to break down the Big 12 Championship rematch between Baylor and Oklahoma State. Also, Pastor Scotty tells us about a time he almost fought a Pokes fan.

Your Baylor Bears are heading to a conference championship game for the second time in 3 years after a grind-it-out type of win and a little help from the Oklahoma State Cowboys. It wasn't the type of game we expected to see in the BUTT Bowl, but the Bears found a way to win and that's all that matters.

Travis kicks off this episode discussing his disbelief that Baylor has a 10 win season with a potential to make it 12. He is also pretty excited this championship game will not include either OU or UT given their soon to be exit from the Big 12. Travis talks the Dave Aranda likely extension and why he is such a good fit for Baylor.

Next he talks more about the wild coaching carousel and how in a 24 hour span both head coaching positions at Oklahoma and Notre Dame became available. Travis follows up with a quick recap of the Texas Tech game before Pastor Scotty enlightens us with a story about a fight he almost got into with some Pokes fans.

Please Bear with Me will then welcome guest Travis Roeder, an X's and O's aficionado, to break down the rematch between Baylor and Oklahoma State. Roeder explains what he thinks both defenses will do differently, what the addition of Terrel Bernard means for Baylor, and finally what Blake Shapen brings to the offense.

Most Bears fans didn't think we'd find ourselves in the conference championship, but yet here we are. Dave Aranda has an excellent opportunity in year 2 to do what Matt Rhule couldn't in year 3. The top 2 defenses in the conference face off on Saturday in a top 10 matchup; what an exciting time to be a Baylor fan.

S5E17 - The Bears are Big 12 Champs! Plus Eddie Lackey!

Eddie Lackey joins PBwM this week to break down the Bears 3rd conference championship. Was this the best defensive performance of all time for the Bears? Was "The McPlay" the best play in Baylor history? Come find out in this week's episode.

The Baylor Bears are Big 12 Champions for a 3rd time in program history which now ties Baylor with 2nd most all-time. The Bears defeated the Oklahoma State Cowboys 21-16 in what was one of the best games of the weekend and of the season. For anyone worried about whether or not the new Big 12 could draw viewership, I think that has been put to bed.

Travis starts this episode discussing how Baylor has taken over the Big 12. Never in the history of the conference has a University simultaneously held a Big 12 title in football, men's basketball, and women's basketball until now. The future is bright for Baylor in this conference.

Then we dive into a recap of the Big 12 Championship game. We also talk about the defensive performance and how this could be Baylor's best defensive performance of all time. We all know how elite our defense can be when everything is clicking and we saw that this past weekend. The Bears intercepted Spencer Sanders 4 times while only allowing 70 yards rushing on 40 carries. Travis was confident a Blake Shapen led team could win the Big 12, so bear with him while he toots his own horn. Shapen started the game with 17 straight completions, an FBS record this year, and at one point had more TD's than he did incompletions.

Travis then gives his thoughts on a few specific plays throughout the game. The 4th and 1 which the Bears did not convert and of course "The McPlay", the amazing play made by former walk on Jairon McVea to win Baylor the title game.

Finally, Please Bear with Me is joined by former Baylor linebacker, Big 12 Champion, and All-Big 12 performer Eddie Lackey. Eddie talks about the anniversary of winning Baylor's first Big 12 title in the ice fog game vs Texas in 2013. He recalls the feeling of running out on the field and how great the atmosphere was in Floyd Casey given the weather. He also breaks down "The McPlay" and describes how difficult it is to make a play like that; plus much more!

This game is a fun one to revisit so listen in as Travis and Eddie take you through it. The Baylor Bears, picked to finish 8th in the preseason poll, are Big 12 Champions and it feels so good. Who would have thought?

Sugar Bowl Preview with Brad Logan

Travis discusses Baylor's recent bowl history as well as the 1957 Sugar Bowl victory over #2 Tennessee. Then Brad Logan of Inside the Rebels on 247Sports and host of the BLEAVinOleMiss Podcast joins the podcast to give us an inside look at this Ole Miss Rebels football team.

The Bears are bowling and Travis is here to get you ready for an exciting matchup with the Ole Miss Rebels. The Rebels have had somewhat of a similar experience as Baylor over the last couple of years. Both teams are in their 2nd year of a new head coach and both teams are coming off of a lackluster year. Ole Miss is coming off of a 5-5 year, and of course the Bears coming off of a 2 win season.

Travis begins this episode doing a small recap of Baylor's recent bowl history starting in 2010. This will be Baylor's 10th bowl game since then and their 4th BCS/NY6 bowl appearance. The Bears are 5-4 in those bowl games and 0-3 in BCS/NY6 bowl games. Travis will then recap Baylor's 1957 Sugar Bowl victory over the undefeated #2 Tennessee Volunteers. This will be Baylor's 3rd Sugar Bowl appearance and they are 1-1 in this bowl.

Next, Brad Logan of Inside the Rebels on 247Sports and host of the BLEAVinOleMiss podcast joins Please Bear with Me. He talks through the turnaround the Rebel's have experienced in year 2 of Lane Kiffin and why Lane is a good fit at Ole Miss. We discuss the Ole Miss offense led by highly touted QB Matt Corral and the defense who is playing much better than what the numbers will tell you.

Finally Travis compares where each team ranks nationally and gives us a game prediction. This is one of the better matchups this bowl season as it will feature one of the best offenses in Ole Miss vs one of the best defenses in Baylor. Something has got to give and we will find out on Saturday!

A Sugar Sweet Season Finale

Travis is joined for one final time this season by Scotty Swingler to discuss the Bear's Sugar Bowl victory and a recap of Baylor's historic season.

The Bears capped off a sugar sweet football season with a 21-7 win in the Sugar Bowl for Baylor's first ever NY6 bowl victory. This 12 win season is a program record and what an amazing turnaround it was for Coach Dave Aranda's 2nd year at the helm.

Please Bear with Me once again welcomes Scotty Swingler to help recap this incredible season. This episode starts with a recap of the ups and downs of the Sugar Bowl and the impressive amount of records the Bears were able to set. Also, how Baylor was able to win despite only 40 passing yards on the day.

Travis and Scotty will also recap the season in its entirety. Both of the guys were surprised at how the season turned out based on the expectations they both set for the year. This rolls right into what expectations each of them has for the program moving forward especially given the news surrounding the inevitable contract extension for Dave Aranda.

This episode wraps up with a very rough outlook on what the roster may look like next year. Not as many guys are leaving as Travis thought and most of the core of the offensive identity will be returning (OL and QB). Both of the guys think there will be a heck of a battle for playing time at WR and DB.

Thanks to everyone who listened to this season 5 of Please Bear with Me and thank you to all of the guests who so graciously took the time to join us. We certainly wouldn't have had this fun of a year without you.
